I grew up in a bookless house - my parents didn't read poetry, so if I hadn't had the chance to experience it at school I'd never have experienced it. But I loved English, and I was very lucky in that I had inspirational English teachers, Miss Scriven and Mr. Walker, and they liked us to learn poems by heart, which I found I loved doing.

The Meaning of This Quote

This quote is about a person’s experience with poetry. The speaker grew up in a house that did not have books and their parents did not read poetry, so if not for the opportunity at school to learn about and experience it, they would never have. Nonetheless, they enjoyed English class and were lucky to have two English teachers, Miss Scriven and Mr. Walker, who encouraged them to learn poems by heart. Doing this made the speaker love poetry even more.
