I urge younger artists to know that you don't have to be anything you don't want. You can do whatever's comfortable for you. From the music I make, to the things I do in my life, I'm true to my R&B core. I have the capability to make pop records and crossover, but that's not my aim.

The Meaning of This Quote

This quote is encouraging young artists to not do something that makes them feel uncomfortable. The speaker is emphasizing the importance of being true to yourself. They are letting younger artists know that it is ok and even encouraged to stay true to their core of what kind of music they want to make. While they may have the capability to make more popular and crossover sounds, that doesn’t have to be their focus. They can create the kind of music that is meaningful to them without feeling the need to change for anyone else.
